Abstract The effects of ring injectors on the performance of a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system have been investigated. The investigation was divided into two parts. First the mixing effectiveness of circular and rectangular ring injectors on a heated turbulent jet were investigated. The experiments were carried out using a turbulent jet facility at the Center for Energy and Environmental Research and Services (CEERS) laboratory. For this part of the investigation, air was used as both injection and exhaust gases. Results indicate that the ring injector enhances mixing process between the axial flow and the injecting flow with the rectangular injector having a higher mixing effectiveness. In part two of the investigation, an SCR system with a rectangular two-hole ring injector was developed and the system was tested using the exhaust of a 3-cylinder aspired diesel engine under a moderate shaft loading condition, using ammonia gas as the reducing agent. Results show nearly 80% reductions in NOx emissions. Further study is underway to assess the effect of opposed exhaust flow ammonia injection and tab mixer to identify the best configuration for development of high efficiency automated prototype SCR unit.

Multi-Dimensional Modeling of the Effects of Spilt Injection Scheme on Performance and Emissions of IDI Diesel Engines

One of the important problems in reducing of pollutant emission from DI and IDI diesel engines is trade-off  between soot and NOx. Split injection is one of the most powerful tools that makes the chance to shift the trade-off curve closer to origin.  At the present work, the effect of split injection on the combustion process and emissions of a cylinder IDI diesel engine under the specification...

Performance Evaluation and Emissions improving of Turbocharged DI Diesel Engine with Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR)

Nitrogen oxides (NOx) contribute to a wide range of environmental effects including the formation of acid rain and destroy ozone layer. In-cylinder high temperature flame and high oxygen concentration are the parameters which affect the NOx emissions. The EGR system is a very effective way for reducing NOx emission from a diesel engine (via reduction of these parameters), particularly at the...

Multi-Dimensional Modeling of the Effects of Split Injection Scheme on Combustion and Emissions of Direct-Injection Diesel Engines at Full Load State

One of the important problems in reducing pollutant emission from diesel engines is trade-off between soot and NOx. Split injection is one of the most powerful tools that decrease soot and NOx emissions simultaneously. At the present work, the effect of split injection on the combustion process and emissions of a direct-injection diesel engine under full-load conditions is investigated by the c...

Selective Catalytic Reduction for Heavy-duty and Light-duty Vehicles

Whereas previous emission limit values could be met by primary engine control measures, the limits for PM and NOx from heavy duty engines in 2008/09 (Euro V) and diesel passenger cars in 2014/15 (Euro 6) represent a challenge for the developers of diesel engines and vehicles. Due to the thermodynamics of the Diesel combustion process, it is difficult to optimise the combustion process for both ...
